Billy Joe Saunders v David Lemieux Tips

Billy Joe Saunders defends his WBO world middleweight title in Canada on Sunday morning against David Lemieux at the Place Bell, Laval. The Englishman proves he has no trouble going to an opponent’s backyard, but has been performing below-par in recent outings, and bookmakers think he’ll struggle again.

A successful defence is favourite, odds-on favourite, to be exact, but the market is closer than many had expected going into the weekend, and that has the attention of fight fans looking to nick a profit. Delve deeper into the betting, and you’ll find a share of Christmas treats. Read on as our team of big fight experts offer their best betting tips and predictions.

Billy Joe Saunders vs David Lemieux – Fight Preview and Predictions

Undefeated Hatfield resident Billy Joe Saunders trips to Canada with confidence, showing a perfect 25-fight record, with a dozen of those coming inside-the-distance. Impressive, but the 28-year-old hasn’t halted a foe since dealing with Frenchman Yoann Bloyer in 2015, a man who retired with his CV at 18-33-2. That bout went just four rounds, but the three since have all been decided on points.

Including last time out, Saunders beat American Willie Munroe Jr by a unanimous decision at the Copper Box Arena, London in September. Plenty of the usual ranting and raving pre-fight that accompanies a Billy Joe defence, but the bout itself passed without incident, strolling to victory. He’s 5/6 with Betfair to win again, or there’s more to get excited about when playing the method of victory market. Points cheer makes sense, 11/8 with most firms, including 888Sport, while a KO/TKO will earn you 6/1 (Coral).

Home hero David Lemieux doesn’t do an awful lot to impress on paper, going into this one with a record of 38 wins against three defeats. With two of those losses being knockouts, that raises question marks over the challenger’s chin. Well, perhaps not, as the fighters to stop him were Gennady Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio, eight rounds and seven rounds. Well, easy enough to forgive, considering the level of opponent.

Can Billy Joe place himself in the same category as Triple G? We used to think so, but he’ll need a big performance to win the growing numbers of doubters back. The bout not to go the distance is 11/10 at Coral, against 8/11 (Betfred) on this one hearing the final bell. A home win is 11/10, top price when getting your stake down at William Hill, but the Canadian’s best chance is a knockout, 7/4 (888Sport), more likely than the points cheer, a whopping 5/1 at Hills.

Billy Joe Saunders vs David Lemieux – Betting Tips and Predictions

Billy Joe Saunders seems to have been treading water for a while now, through inactivity and a couple of sluggish shows, but I fully expect to see him back to somewhere near his best here. When we got closer to this fight I expected the Englishman to go at around the 2/5 mark, so 5/6 is unbelievable value and, unless I’m reading this one wrong, I’d say steam right in.

A nice price in a sport where value is increasingly difficult to come by in the 1-X-2 market. There’s more though and, as usual, we won’t stop there. Like any good fighter, we refuse to sit back and admire our work, instead, surging forward to finish the job. The bet to do that is a points verdict at 11/8 (888Sport).
