Jamie Conlan vs Jerwin Ancajas – Fight Preview and Predictions

31-year-old Belfast native Jamie Conlan has made a punch-perfect start to his professional career, winning each of his previous 19 bouts, 11 of those coming inside-the-distance. The fighter dubbed The Mexican, due to his exciting, aggressive style of boxing, was last seen edging Yader Cardoza on the scorecards, nicking a split decision. In a typically action-packed scrap, with the WBC International title up for grabs, Conlan was sent to the canvas in the eighth round, and suffered a cut above his left eye in the 10th. Followers will be hoping that injury has fully healed in the eight months that has passed since that war.

Conlan may duck between the ropes with a fearsome 58% knockout average, but it’s worth mentioning that each of his last two have travelled the scheduled distance, that split decision win over Cardoza following an eight-round nod vs Hungarian also-ran David Koos. The latter certainly wasn’t his best night’s work. The home fighter to win this one, becoming a world champion in the process, is second favourite 24/5 on the Betfair exchange, a points win bigger still at 7/1 (bet365). KO/TKO will be worth celebrating, Paddy Power trading 14/1.

Opponent Jerwin Ancajas travels to Britain with a CV showing 27 wins, one defeat and a draw. Impressive. 5ft 6inch southpaw Pretty Boy’s career loss came way back in 2012, going down on a majority decision points verdict to fellow countryman Mark Anthony Geraldo. It did nothing to halt his progress, and Ancajas has rhymed off 14 wins since, 13 of those by way of KO/TKO. That’s a run that’ll cause a few sleepless nights in the Team Conlan camp.

Japan’s Teiru Kinoshita was the last man to step up to the plate, the 31-year-old battered into submission in seven brutal rounds. That was more than enough to impress odds compilers, the away day favourite at 1/5, best price Bet Victor. Another KO makes sense at 4/9 (Betfair), points a lively option at 5/1 (bet365).

Jamie Conlan vs Jerwin Ancajas – Betting Tips and Predictions

I’d love to see Conlan win this one and bring another world title to British shores, but the form of both men makes it highly unlikely. Bringing Ancajas over to Belfast won’t be cheap, but promoters needed a big fight on the undercard to boost interest in Frampton’s comeback. Personally, I can’t see a way for The Mexican to upset the odds here.

Jamie is tough enough, and won’t be blown away early, so we’ll have this bout going beyond the half-way stage at 2/5 with Ladbrokes, or those who love a pop at the value can try their luck on the jolly claiming this on points, in the method of victory market at 5/1 (bet365). An attractive price, but we’re sure to experience a few nervy moments along the way.
