Liam Smith vs Liam Williams – Fight Preview Predictions

Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith won a controversial April meeting between these fighters, courtesy of a ninth-round stoppage. Convincing, on paper anyway, but there was plenty going on behind the bare result that made the rematch unavoidable. With the interim WBO light middleweight title on the line, Smith messed up on the scales, failing to make the championship limit, meaning he may have won the fight, but failed to collect the belt. The Scouser suffered a nasty gash above his eye early in the contest, and looked in trouble, but rallied back, Williams cut twice above his right eye, an injury that called a halt to the night.

That moved the 5ft 9inch orthodox boxer’s record to 25 wins, against one draw and a single defeat, the spare negative easy enough to ignore, coming at the fists of Saul Alvarez. Smith was stopped himself in nine that night in America, Canelo coming through an early scare to bank the KO many expected of him. Beefy won’t lose too much sleep over that failed gamble, and he came back a better boxer for it, winning his two starts since, including that triumph over Williams at the Manchester Arena.

Despite the celebration, odds compilers have Smith as second favourite going into this one, Coral’s 6/5 one of the better quotes around, but it’s as near to a pick-em as you’ll find in the boxing world, with very little in the fight winner betting. We usually give no mention to the draw, but at 22/1, in such a competitive match-up, I wouldn’t put anyone off. Another KO/TKO cheer for Smigga is 9/4, top offer at Betfair, the points win a 9/2 shot across the board.

Liam Williams ducks in as the less experienced man, beaten by the same opponent last time, but followers will find him at the head of the betting to draw level in the head-to-head stats. That loss to Smith remains the only blot on his copybook, showing a record of 16 wins, one draw and the loss. The Welshman, fighting out of Clydach Vale, will see this as a quick-fire opportunity to right a few wrongs, propelling himself back towards the world title picture.

Liam Smith vs Liam Williams – Betting Tips and Predictions

The 25-year-old is currently no better than 888Sport’s 4/5 to win the rematch, but that’s where you want your money to be if you rate his chances, as the market is a minefield, filled with a lot less value. Don’t allow yourself to be tripped up. For example, Betfred have the same result at 8/13. If you wanted to push your luck a bit further, opening the door for a shot at a bigger pay-out, bet365 have Williams on points as favourite, top price 11/5. The early night is yours at 3/1 through Betfair.

This is a 50/50 in my eyes and, as a punter, you’ve got to back the bigger price in these circumstances and hope for a rub of the green. Another Smith win wouldn’t surprise, and the 6/5 you’ll find at a few shops, including Coral, is cracking value. If you’re a follower of boxing, this will be an enjoyable night, so take the price and sit back knowing you’re already in front.

A fast start from Smith, in front of a strong support, and I’d keep my eye on the cash-out. For me, bookies have the prices the wrong way around here. I’m happy to keep it simple, but if you want a bit more, take the points verdict at 9/2.
