Stephen Smith vs Francisco Vargas – Boxing Preview & Betting Tips

Super featherweight bout – Boxing from Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas at 3:00am 10th December 2017

Stephen Smith v Francisco Vargas Tips

It may have been overlooked, due to the high class of boxing going on in London and New York this weekend, but Liverpool favourite Stephen Smith travels to Las Vegas, where he’ll take on Francisco Vargas at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Brought in as an opponent, the Englishman will fancy an upset win.

The betting has this as a wasted journey for Smith though, but there’s reason to believe he has what it takes to ruin the party, and backers will be cheering him on as they burn the midnight oil, the bout screened live on Sky Sports, with a 3.00am start pencilled in. What’s the chances of an away win? Follow our betting tips and predictions to find out.

Stephen Smith vs Francisco Vargas – Fight Preview and Predictions

Super featherweight Stephen Smith has lost three of his 28-bout career, one of those defeats coming inside-the-distance. Stopped in eight by Lee Selby back in 2011 for British and Commonwealth titles, the Welshman’s form since makes that easy to forgive. Fast-forward five years before we see the 32-year-old lose again, this time beaten on points by Jose Pendraza for a world title, then Jason Sosa last November, a WBA strap on the line that night.

Smith hasn’t been in competitive action since that loss in Monte Carlo to Sosa, boxing only once, an easy first round KO win over Hungarian Karoly Gallovich. A fight he was expected to win with minimal fuss, a fight he did win with minimal fuss. He won’t get as much luck on Sunday, 11/4 with Coral on the shock, or there’s 8/1 with the same firm about him scoring a KO/TKO, 9/2 the points verdict. Smith isn’t the biggest puncher, and it’s no easy feat winning over the judges when coming out of the away corner.

Francisco Vargas – 23 wins, one defeat and two draws. The 32-year-old Mexican takes part in his comeback fight, and is nailed on favourite with bookmakers to get the desired result, but his recent form suggests traders may have gone a little over the top with that one. Winless in his two most recent goes, a majority decision draw with Orlando Salido was followed by an 11th round KO at the hands of Miguel Berchelt back in January for the WBC crown.

The bare result reads KO, but Vargas was beaten on his feet by Berchelt, suffering a cut nose, cut right eye and gashed left eye. The referee saved him from himself. We’ll now see just what Vargas is made of. Can he make the move back down from fighting for a WBC title to going in with Smith for the chance to work their way back towards big nights? The betting thinks so, no more than 888Sport’s 7/20 available on a win, or the KO is favourite in the method of victory market at 5/6 (Betfred). 10/3 (bet365) says he wins on points.

Stephen Smith vs Francisco Vargas – Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookies are taking for granted that Vargas will claim this then move onto bigger and better things, but I don’t think it’s as cut-and-dry as that. This is a step down for the favourite, who’ll struggle to go back to his bread and butter, while it’s a chance for Smith to relaunch his career and make memories. Does he deserve a chance at 11/4? Well, I wouldn’t put anyone off, that’s for sure.

The fight going beyond 7.5 rounds is the NAP of our betting tips, 1/2 available when investing your stake at Ladbrokes. Looking for something better? There’s 6/4 at Betfair on this one going the distance, and that’s next best of our predictions. Smith will aim to stay out of danger in the opening rounds, keen to get a foothold in the contest, while Vargas aims to shake the cobwebs off.
