UEFA Champions League, kick-off at 7:45pm Wednesday 18th October 2017 from Estadio Da Luz
Darren Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov were on target in an entertaining 2-2 draw when Manchester United and Benfica last met. During the 2011/12 Champions League campaign, United got a 1-1 away from home, but had to settle for a 2-2 at Old Trafford. That would suggest we’re in for an entertaining renewal.
With each of the last two meetings ending level, we wouldn’t put anyone off another share of the points in Wednesday’s encounter, especially with Betfair trading a market best price of 11/4. We won’t be sitting on the fence however, as there’s more to be had. Free betting tips and predictions to follow.

Team News – Benfica
Benfica would certainly welcome a point from this fixture, and it would be their first on the board in Group A, the locals, going into the night bottom of the pile, showing two defeats from two starts. Are they out of their depth? Sharing a pool with United, Basel and CSKA Moscow certainly isn’t mission impossible, but they’ve offered nothing so far that would suggest they’re capable of finishing in the top-two.
Starting things off with a 2-1 home defeat to Moscow, Benfica were then spotted on the wrong end of a 5-0 hammering away to Basel. Now, the winners that day aren’t the best in this competition, far from it, but they had little trouble banking all three points, goals from Lang, Oberlin x2, Wolfswinkel and Galeano making for a comfortable night’s work. Almeida was sent off on 62 minutes for the beaten club, putting a line through any slim chances they had of making things interesting.
That performance goes some way to explaining why a Benfica win has been written off in the market, and it’s the outsider of three in the match betting, but they’re not as big a price as you might expect. Bet635 currently lead the charge if you want to try the upset in your betting tips and predictions, 4/1 available. I did think they’d be chunkier than that.
Team News – Man Utd
We saw Jose Mourinho doing what he does best at the weekend. Draws held his side back in the Premier League last season, due to their inability to put the ball in the net, but it was a draw they aimed for in Saturday’s live match with Liverpool at Anfield, and a share they got, thanks to a 0-0 finish. The Red Devils lost ground on Man City at the top, but also prevented a rival for the top-four getting three points.
A frustrating afternoon for Jurgen Klopp, he watched on as his men were limited to just five shots on target, despite finishing with 62% of the match possession. United put just one of six shots on target, Lukaku suffering a rare off day, but at the sounding of the full-time whistle, Mourinho allowed himself a wry smile. Job done. Another clean-sheet on Wednesday is 8/5 at Sportingbet. We expect that to prove popular with punters.
United go into his clash as favourites to get back to winning ways at the first time of asking, but if you want to back the English side, you’ll have your work cut out getting a price worth shouting about. Odds-on across the board, 888Sport trade 4/5, and that seems to be the general feeling at the time of writing. That can be put to good use.
Benfica vs Man Utd – UEFA Champions League Tips and Betting Predictions
The draw is always a danger when United are involved, especially away from home, but we don’t think that’ll be an issue here. Man Utd to win is a better price than I thought it would be at 4/5 (888Sport), so we’re going to jump on. Personally, I’d go around the 1/2 mark, meaning it’s a must-have. Ace of our betting tips, and a slice of value, all things considered.
That’s one for your multiples, but if you’re on the lookout for a bet that’ll spring your midweek to life, the correct score market could be for you. 1-0 Man Utd is the next best of our predictions, and that’s a 13/2 second favourite with Betfair. We expect Mourinho to set his side up off a solid base, looking to pick the hosts off on the break. Let’s hope we’re right.
