Barnsley vs Middlesbrough – Tips and Betting Predictions

Championship, kick-off at 3:00pm Saturday 14th October 2017 from Oakwell

Barnsley v Middlesbrough Tips

Middlesbrough take their quest for quick-fire promotion back to the Premier League to Oakwell on Saturday, where they line-up against a Barnsley side within touching distance of the relegation zone. The locals have managed just one win from their last five, and have been written off in the betting to bank a maximum here.

This will be the first meeting of these sides since an FA Cup clash in 2015, which Middlesbrough won 2-0. They last shared a league back in the 2013/14 season. Boro enjoy a comfortable cushion over their hosts on the head-to-head stats and we look at the prices available for them to extend that. A bookie bashing is in order – let’s run through the best of our betting tips and predictions.

Team News – Barnsley

Paul Heckingbottom’s side scored only their third win of the season last time out, getting the better of Millwall in London, meaning they’ve taken four points from the last six available. A 1-1 vs QPR was followed by a 3-1 away to The Lions, Bradshaw scoring a double, before Thiam added a third. Gregory netted a penalty for the beaten side to send them into the break level, but a second-half collapse heaped pressure on Millwall, while gifting The Tykes a bit of breathing space.

The winning manager chose to focus on the referee’s performance, rather than that of his players. Upset at the penalty awarded against his side, he had it out with the man in the middle at half-time, and was told he was banned from the bench for the second period. That looked the perfect opportunity to praise his boys, building confidence. Is it a chance missed? We’ll find out in the coming weeks. No doubt a fair bit of back-slapping took place behind closed doors.

Barnsley to win two games on the bounce, adding to their recent good form, has been written off by traders, Sportingbet particularly keen to oppose, offering out a market best price of 7/2. There’s plenty to like about the home side, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see them go in a share of weekend betting tips and predictions. Both teams have scored in each of Barnsley’s last three, and the same again is 4/5 at Coral.

Team News – Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough invested over the summer, but they haven’t exactly impressed so far this season and can be found kicking their heels down in 11th. Four wins, four draws and three defeats is the form of a midtable side if ever I saw one, and they must turn draws into wins if they are to live up to expectations and force a promotion finish, either through the play-offs or top-two.

The Smoggies have picked up just one win in their last five, the spare in that run coming over QPR at the Riverside last month. Since then, Garry Monk’s men have drawn away to Fulham, lost to Norwich and battled out a 2-2 finish with Brentford on their last appearance. We expected them to win the latter, but twice found themselves behind, Barbet and Watkins goals cancelled out by Braithwaite and Fabio. Brentford boss Dean Smith thought it two points dropped, while Monk thought his boys suffered from nerves.

Despite that recent patchy form, those who hold the purse strings want to keep Middlesbrough close, and have them as betting favourites to pull off the desired result. 10/11 goes on the away win with the majority of firms, including Betfair. One for your accumulators, perhaps, but there’s enough there for believers to steam into a super single.

Barnsley vs Middlesbrough – Championship Tips and Betting Predictions

I fancy Middlesbrough, but have had my fingers burnt on them recently. Therefore, we’ll keep things simple and follow the stats. Both teams to score would have been a winning bet in each of Barnsley’s last three and in two of Middlesbrough’s last three. Stick with that at 4/5 with Coral, which goes in as the best of our betting tips at Oakwell.

In the correct score field, we’re going to take a pop at the 1-1 finish, which comes out as a 6/1 shot with William Hill. That’s favourite in the market, but it’s difficult to trust these two to go and get the win, so we’ll side with what appears to be a touch of value. A bit of luck needed, but if things fall into place, it’ll be a useful pay-out.
