Vfl Wolfsburg v Man Utd

The group stages of the Champions League come to a head in the next few days, and there’s still plenty to be decided. As seems to have been the case in the last few years, the English teams have struggled a little at Europe’s top table, and this year Man Utd are one of three teams who are well and truly approaching squeaky bum time!

Their cross City rivals are the only English side already safely through, while the other three all have work to do. For Man Utd the equation is highly likely to be an easy one, they are going to need to win. It’s possible that a draw might just do it, but that would require PSV to fail to win their home game against bottom side CSKA. So it’s all set up for what might have to be an open attacking game, with both teams having to go for the win, knowing that defeat is likely to leave them in 3rd. Which makes the following enhanced odds for the game even more interesting:

Wolfsburg v Man Utd preview

How do we see this one panning out then? European games are often tough to call, the teams don’t meet too often, and there’s not a great deal of form in the book. But they have met once already this season, the earlier group game in Manchester was won by United, although only just. It finished 2-1 to the home side, who turned around an early deficit to win the game in the second half.

Having taken the lead just 10 minutes into the second half most of the crowd were expecting a routine victory with a couple more goals to follow. But it wasn’t to be the case, and in the latter stages Wolfsburg had the chances to take something from the game. Had they been able to do so they’d have qualified by now and United would be contemplating the second tier of European football for a second season running.

Gone are the days where you can expect Man Utd to head to Germany and get the job done, this is a tough one and they will have to be at their best to progress now. The potential boost for them is the way the group has turned out, meaning Wolfsburg can’t afford to play for the draw. 0-0 here in the last minute, PSV ahead at home to the Russian side, and a goal either way settles it. You’d think that neither side will be happy with this, and the aim must surely be to get the job done at the first possible opportunity.

Even the best part of a week ahead of the game there’s some team news – it looks like Rooney will be out. The ankle injury suffered in the last league game looks like a bad one, and he’s not going to be playing for a week or two. There’s a school of thought that this isn’t entirely a bad thing though, he hasn’t had his finest start to the season, and perhaps an enforced break will allow United to play in a more pacey manner. If it’s even possible to have a silver lining to losing your captain, perhaps this is it.

United have to go out there and attack. Will they be able to break down the Germans, will they risk sitting back? Will either side risk this fading out into a draw, or will both be looking to get on the scoresheet from the off? Plenty of questions, the answers will come on Tuesday evening.

If you’re having a bet on the game check out the enhanced odds in the table above. There’s plenty of decent bets to be had, just don’t ask us what we think is likely to happen!

Enjoy this last week of Champions League football before the Christmas break.
