Southampton vs Newcastle – Tips and Betting Predictions

Premier League, kick-off at 4:00pm Sunday 15th October 2017 from St Mary's Stadium

Southampton v Newcastle Tips

Top of the bill from Sky Sports’ latest Super Sunday offering goes at St Mary’s Stadium, where locals Southampton test their might against Newcastle. The visitors are higher in the table after seven starts, but there’s only two points in it, meaning there’s everything to play for here. A home win would see The Saints push themselves into the top-10.

Southampton won with plenty to spare when last hosting The Magpies, and bookmakers price them as odds-on shots to go and bank the desired result again. The confidence in a home win is surprising, but is it well placed? Read on as we pick through the best of our betting tips and predictions. Let’s make your viewing pay.

Team News – Southampton

Southampton have failed to live up to expectations this season, and go into round eight on the back of two defeats in-a-row. They have, in fact, lost three of their last four, those negative results coming against Watford, Man Utd and Stoke. Saints have won just twice this season, and once in their last five. Far from impressive, and when we learn that the spare victory came against the division’s whipping boys Crystal Palace, it holds even less weight.

Mauricio Pellegrino hasn’t taken as kindly to the English top-flight as local fans would have hoped. They had every chance to put that right against a very average Stoke City before the international break, but again left empty-handed, beaten 2-1 at the Bet365 Stadium. Diouf had The Potters ahead at half-time, before Yoshida levelled on 75 minutes. Painfully brief, Crouch settled things five minutes from time.

Southampton had over 70% of possession that day, forcing 21 shots at goal, but their misfiring frontline put just three on target. That’s appalling. There will be some frank discussions taking place on the training ground during the international break we are sure. Will it have the desired effect? Bookies think so, and there’s no more than bet365’s 10/11 going if you want the locals to feature in your Sunday betting tips and predictions. Odds on about a side that lost their last two. Strange.

Team News – Newcastle

The visitors won’t care too much that they have been written off in the run-up to this one. In fact, we expect they’ll welcome the underdog tag, happy to go in without pressure. Newcastle deserve our respect, especially against Southampton, as they’ve won three of their last five, losing just one match during that purple patch. Winless in two, but they followed defeat to Brighton with a cracking draw vs Liverpool last time.

Expected to be a free-scoring thriller, the match at St James Park vs Liverpool never really caught fire, but there was plenty of drama to speak of. Coutinho scored the opener on 29 minutes, Newcastle getting themselves back level through a Joselu strike on 36 minutes. A frustrating afternoon for Jurgen Klopp, but opposite number Rafa Benitez seemed happy enough. The gaffer was far from pleased with his side’s overall home form this season, but took encouragement from the amount of chances created against Liverpool.

They’ll need to create plenty more, and start sticking them in the net, if they are to boost their tally by three on Sunday. This is a very winnable match, against an opponent low on confidence, but The Magpies will have to go and earn the pay-out. Sportingbet are best on the draw at 27/10, while Bet Victor’s who you’re after if looking to back Newcastle, 15/4 available there. Top price in the market, and a top price all round, considering the form of both.

Southampton vs Newcastle – Premier League Tips and Betting Predictions

How can we back Southampton at odds on? Fair enough, they enjoy home advantage, but Newcastle seem sharper on the road, they certainly were last season, and go in with the better results. An away win really would come as no surprise, but I’m going to take the safety net of the handicap and have Newcastle +1 as the NAP of our betting tips at even money with Betfair. We should get a real run for our money with that one.

In the correct score market, I’m going to push my luck a little and have 1-0 Newcastle as the next best of our match predictions, a play that will see us rewarded handsomely, if it comes good. Thankfully, odds compilers really don’t rate it, offering a tempting 12/1 at Betfair on us being right. That’s more than good enough to merit an interest.
