England and Portugal specials

Support both nations at 14/5

Football punters are a picky bunch. It wasn’t too long ago we were happy to get ourselves down to the local betting office by 2.55pm to place our weekend accumulators and now there are thousands of markets available every day that we can get involved in without leaving the house. Betting on most major matches also continues until the last kick of the ball.

You’d imagine that was more than enough for anyone and we’d think ourselves lucky, but a generation of internet users are used to getting more and getting it now. That’s why you’ll find an abundance of outright and match markets available on World Cup 2018 from the traditional to the weird and wonderful.

Everyone’s catered for this summer and if you’re not, Coral’s exciting new #YourCall feature allows you to create your own bets and fellow punters can get involved too. Fancy having your stake on an outcome that hasn’t been priced up? Coral say it’s your money – your rules. Simply Tweet them the suggestion using #YourCall and if traders think it’s interesting enough they’ll give you a price and enter it into their system.

That’s exactly what one backer has done when putting forward an England and Portugal special. They believe both nations will reach at least the quarter-finals and the football guys at Coral’s Stratford HQ fancied a go, offering 14/5.

Let’s take a closer look at the chances…..

England need a strong base

England

We’re not too sure what to expect from Southgate in his first World Cup attempt. The manager has already made headlines with his team selection and although there has been the usual critics, there’s certainly plenty of quality in the ranks. How England fair against Tunisia in game one should give us a good indication of where they’re at.

Tunisia is a match they should win and then it’s Panama – a team they really should be beating. There’s no easy fixtures in international football any more but you’d expect a comfortable outing there with a few goals scored. Take six points before facing Belgium and that should be enough to progress.

In the last 16 round the winners of Group G will play the runners up from Group H. If England place in the top two of their division they’ll come up against either Poland, Senegal, Columbia or Japan and that wouldn’t scare anyone in the Three Lions camp. A strong group phase is needed but the quarters is the least fans should be expecting.

Portugal

They now have the feel for winning major competitions, but will they take their form to Russia? You’d imagine this will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup – certainly as a prime player – but he’s a man oozing confidence and that will encourage those around him in the dressing room. It certainly wouldn’t be the biggest shock in football if Portugal were to go on and win World Cup 2018.

They have a tricky Group B to contend with where they’ll face Spain, Morocco and Iran but you’d expect them to come through that with seven points our prediction before a ball has been kicked. Things will then get serious when winners of Group B face Group A runners up or Group B runners up vs Group A champions.

If Portugal finish first or second, they’ll be paired with Russia, Egypt, Uruguay or Saudi Arabia. Our first thought on that is Portugal v Egypt which would be a game worth watching. Whoever they draw in the knockout stages you’d fancy Portugal to continue their adventure.
