Champions League enhanced odds

The Champions League is the main competition for European football clubs organised by UEFA. It was once designed to be a tournament for clubs winning major leagues across Europe with the aim of finding the best team on the continent that season. Times have changed, however, and the current set-up of the Champions League sees the best nations send up to four teams. The English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, and German Bundesliga, for example, all have their champions as well as teams finishing second, third and fourth competing.

Champions League football usually begins in summer with the early qualifying rounds before those involved face a playoff for a spot in the group stages and that’s where the big cash prizes come into play. Making it to the group stages guarantees a team six games and if they finish first or second in their pool they progress to the knockout stages where they draw teams’ home and away.

Each game from the Champions’ League group stages through to the final is shown on several major TV stations across globe, including BT Sport in the United Kingdom. That’s great news for armchair fans and as you would expect the leading online bookmakers have forced their way into the picture too. Bookies ensure they get their slice of this lucrative cake by offering betting odds on each market as well as the outright winner of the Champions League.

    About the Champions League

The idea of a tournament for Europe’s best clubs came into existence in 1955 but the tournament was rebranded in 1992 becoming something like what we know and love today. 79 teams enter the competition and are whittled down to 32 before the group stage.

Bayern Munich won the Champions League title in 2020, beating PSG in the final but they lifted the trophy at an empty venue due to the coronavirus restrictions that barred fans from attending. The record books show the German Bundesliga side have now won six titles between 1974 and 2020 and have also been runners up on five occasions.

Those are impressive stats, but they aren’t the Champions League’s most successful team. That honour goes to Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid who have clinched the trophy a total of 13 times between 1956 and 2018, ending as runners up three times. The stats of Blancos show they dominated the competition between 2014 and 2018, finishing on top four times in those five seasons which was a remarkable feat.

    Champions League format

After reaching the group stages of the Champions League each of the 32 teams involved are dropped into pools alongside three other clubs. The order is picked with one team coming from the top pot, another from pot two, one pot three club and a pot four. This ensures many of the top teams avoid each other at the earliest stage although there have been many cases of extremely competitive pools which are referred to as that year’s ‘group of death’.

Each team plays the other three clubs in their pool twice to make a total of six group matches. They face-off against their group rivals once at home and again at the home stadium of their opponents. The teams finishing first and second from each group progress to the knockout stages where they’ll draw another team and play them over two legs.

Again, this is one game at home and the other away. The club ending third in the pool has the consolation of dropping into the Europa League knockout stages and those ending fourth are eliminated from all European competition for the season.
