    This will be the first European Championship where video assistant referee, popularly known as VAR, will be used and that could prove to be a real landmark in the sport. Teams qualified through the traditional method of coming through their qualifying groups, but others joined thanks to the path given to them by the new UEFA Nations League competition. Teams winning their Nations League were added to a Euro 2020 playoff and this is something that is expected to be a permanent fixture in major competitions like the Euros and World Cup going forward.

    Euro 2020 format

    When the European Championships get going in June 2021 the group stage will begin. This consists of pools of teams with the winners and runners up of each set progressing to the last 16. There will also be a chance for the best third-placed teams to move forward. From the round of 16 the tournament becomes knockout football with each game providing a winner for the next round. If a fixture ends in a draw, then extra-time and penalties will be used if needed.

    The final played at Wembley Stadium in July will also be played to a finish. If that game ends in a draw, then both teams will play extra-time. If the scoreboard remains level at that point, then penalties will come into play to decide a champion.
