        Totesport or Totepool?

        Totesport is the name of the company you are betting with. Totepool is one of their products, and in fact if you look around you’ll note that Totepool betting is actually available through other bookmakers as well. This is because it is simply an alternative type of betting to you standard fixed odds betting that you’ll generally see the bookies offering.

        Totepool works in a slightly different way – essentially all the bets taken on a certain event are placed into a “pool” of money. A calculation is then applied that works out what proportion of the overall pool has been placed on each selection. Once this proportion is known, the odds are then calculated for each selection, resulting in what is known as a dividend per selection.

        The dividends quoted are always to the pound. So if a dividend is £2.20, this means you’ll get back £2.20 for every pound you staked.

        One interesting thing about this type of betting (which you may be familiar with, if for example you are a regular at the dogs) is that the dividends change continually in the build up to a race while the money is being placed. Once the race begins the pool is closed and the dividend values are fixed. It is only at this point that you’ll actually know the exact amount you would stand to win should your selection be a winner. It adds an additional element to your normal betting and continues to be very popular, particularly for sports such as the dogs and the horses.
